I walk Every Day. Is That Enough?

The answer is yes…and no.

If you walk every day, you’re doing something wonderful for your health.

But is walking enough?

The answer is: yes AND no.

Walking is one of the best habits you can have.

It gets you moving🚶‍➡️,

supports your heart 💖,

boosts your mood 🌞,

and keeps you active 💃.

And if you’re consistently carving out time for a daily walk—celebrate that! 🎉

But if your goal is to stay strong, mobile, capable, and independent for decades to come,

your body needs more than what walking alone can provide.

As we move through midlife, we need to intentionally protect our muscles, bones, joints, balance, mobility, and cardiovascular fitness.

Walking can absolutely be part of that equation—but it can’t do every job.

So, keep walking. Just don’t stop there.

Why This Matters

The 6 pillars of pillars of fitness are muscular strength, cardiovascular stamina, balance, flexibility, coordination and power. To prevent injuries, reduce the risk of preventable diseases, and feel your best as you get older, your fitness routine should include strategies to train all 6 of these pillars.

FITNESS SIMPLIFIED

Walking is a wonderful foundation for fitness—but your body needs movements that challenge it in ways your daily steps simply can’t.

Fitness Tip for Healthy Aging

Strengthen Through Your Full Range

Walking gets you moving, reduces stress, and offers tremendous health benefits.

But walking alone leaves two important gaps:

👉 First, each step moves your hips, knees, and ankles through a relatively small range of motion.

To maintain mobility, you need movements that take your joints safely through deeper ranges—think squats, lunges, reaches, and rotational movements.

👉 Second, once your body adapts to walking, it provides limited resistance for maintaining and building muscle and bone.

That’s where strength training comes in.

So, keep taking your walks!

But pair them with full-range strength and mobility work to build a body that’s not just active—but strong, mobile, and ready for life.

Not sure where to begin? I have a perfect beginner strength workout for you.

Check out the video below. 👇

The Perfect Beginner Strength Workout

  1. Staggered Squats (8 reps/side): Squat with feet slightly offset; switch sides
  2. Bent-Over T’s (8 reps): Works your upper back muscles for better posture
  3. Lateral Skater Hops (8 reps/side): If hopping isn’t comfortable, simply step side to side
  4. Glute Bridges (8 reps): Push with your glutes to lift your hips up
  5. Hip Flexor Stretch (20 secs/side): Set up in half kneeling position and push forward to stretch
  6. Thoracic Rotation Stretch (20 secs/side): Great for your posture and rotational mobility

Extra Tip: Alternate between doing this simple full body workout on one day and a strong, brisk walk the next. Try to include stretching every day if you can!

Did You Know...

  • Strength training may help with more than muscle. Research suggests resistance training can help reduce fat mass and may even improve menopausal symptoms like hot flashes.
  • Strength + balance is a powerful combo. For postmenopausal women with low bone density, training both can help preserve physical function and reduce fall risk.
  • Mobility matters. Your shoulders, hips, knees, and ankles are key joints for everyday movement, but the ones that lose the MOST mobility with age. Keep them strong and moving through a healthy range of motion every day.

NUTRITION SIMPLIFIED

Just as your approach to fitness can evolve, so can the way you think about food.

Nutrition Tip for Healthy Aging

Splurge with Intention

Many of us grew up in the calorie-counting, “good food/bad food” era,

where a splurge felt like cheating.

But healthy eating doesn’t have to work that way.

A splurge is simply something you choose primarily for enjoyment rather than nourishment,

—a dessert, a caloric drink, chips, pizza, or another favorite treat.

The key isn’t eliminating these foods.

It’s being intentional about them.

You can plan to have one intentional splurge every day, but don’t waste it on mindless bites or foods you barely enjoy.

👉 Choose what’s truly worth it for YOU, slow down, and savor it.

Healthy eating isn’t about perfection. It’s about the big picture.

And sometimes, saving your splurge is as simple as reimagining a favorite meal.

Take chicken strips, for example!👇

My version delivers the family-friendly goodness while staying aligned with your everyday nutrition goals.

Bonus—your family will love these!

More ideas to Reimagine Meals
  • Change the cooking method: bake or air-fry instead of deep frying
  • Rethink the sauce: use Greek yogurt as a base for creamy dips, dressing, & sauces.
  • Keep the fav, change the side: burger night is on, with roasted potatoes and a big salad instead of automatically adding fries.

MINDSET SIMPLIFIED

Sometimes getting healthier means letting go of ideas about health that no longer serve us.

Many of us grew up in the calorie-counting, cardio-queen era.

We learned that more cardio was better, fewer calories were better, and certain foods were “good” while others meant we had “cheated”.

It can be surprisingly hard to unwind those beliefs.

But learning something new doesn’t mean you were doing it wrong before.

It simply means you know more now.

Walking can still be wonderful—even when you realize strength and mobility matter, too.

You can still care about nutrition while seeing food as much more than calories.

Healthy aging requires us to stay curious, keep learning, and be willing to change our approach as we learn more.
