Did you know heart disease is the #1 killer of women? 💔
It’s a sobering statistic—and one that deserves our attention, espeically in midlife.
Think of your cardiovascular system as a highway network
delivering oxygen and nutrients throughout your body.
Your heart is the pump,
and your blood vessels are the roads that keep everything moving.
But over time, those roads can become narrowed by plaque buildup or lose flexibility,
making your heart work harder to keep blood flowing.
And as women move through menopause, changes in estrogen and other risk factors can make heart health even more important.
But it’s not all dire.
✨ You have tremendous power to influence your heart health through everyday habits.
Let’s talk about how!
Heart disease is the leading cause of death among women, and cardiovascular risk often increases during and after menopause. Yet an estimated 80% of cardiovascular disease may be preventable through healthy habits and managing risk factors like blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar. The choices you make in midlife can help protect your heart for decades to come.
Cardiovascular fitness is one of the six pillars of fitness—alongside strength, flexibility, balance, coordination, and power—and your heart deserves a well-rounded workout, too!
Fitness Tip to Improve Heart Health
The American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes of “moderate” or 75 minutes of “vigorous” aerobic activity weekly.
So, how hard should you work?
Think of cardio as having five intensity zones, from easy movement (Zone 1) to near-maximum effort (Zone 5).
Ideally, you should be exposing your heart and blood vessels to all 5 zones on a regular basis:
👉 Zones 1-2: Comfortable walks and easy aerobic exercise (sustainable for 30+ min)
👉 Zone 3: Brisk activity that makes conversation harder, like a light jog (sustainable for 15-20+ min)
👉 Zones 4-5: Shorter bursts that really push your heart and lungs (sustainable for only 1-4 min)
Don’t get hung up on the numbers!
Build your foundation with regular moderate cardio first, then gradually introduce harder efforts as appropriate for your fitness level.
The goal isn’t maximum intensity every day—it’s a healthy mix of effort and recovery.
Not sure where to start? Try these 👇 3 exercises as a circuit, doing it 2-4 times through.
They’re joint-friendly but certain to get your heart pumping up into zones 3, 4 and 5!
Extra Tip: When you first try this circuit, rest for 30 seconds in between exercises. But after 1-2 weeks, gradually begin to reduce your rest time to only 25, 20 or 15 seconds in between exercises to force your heart to work even harder.

Nutrition Tip to Improve Heart Health
Omega-3s are essential fats that support heart and blood vessel health, help regulate inflammation, and may modestly lower blood pressure.
But here’s the catch (pun intended 🎣 )—many of us aren’t eating enough omega-3 rich foods!
There are three main types:
🐟 EPA + DHA: Found in fatty fish like salmon, sardines, and mackerel.
—These have the strongest evidence for cardiovascular benefits.
🌱 ALA: Found in walnuts, chia seed, and flaxseeds.
—Your body converts only a small amount into EPA & DHA.
How to cover your bases?
Aim for two servings of fatty fish each week, and regularly include plant-based omega-3 sources.

A healthier heart isn’t built in one big workout—it’s built through the small choices you make every day.
It’s easy to think cardio only “counts” if it’s a long workout or an intense sweat session.
But your heart benefits from movement throughout the day—not just during scheduled workouts.
The secret? ✨ **Consistency, not perfection.**✨
Instead of waiting for the perfect time to exercise, look for opportunities to sneak more movement into your day:
🚶♂️➡️A brisk 10-minute walk after lunch
🪜 A quick climb up the stairs
💃 Dancing while you cook dinner
These little bursts add up, making heart-healthy movement possible even on your busiest days.
Stop thinking you need to do it ALL.
Just keep doing SOMETHING.
Every Step Counts
Protecting your heart is so important, but it doesn’t have to be complicated or overwhelming. Every step you take strengthens your cardiovascular system. The little things you do consistently are what add up to a healthier, stronger heart for years to come.
